TEMPTATIONS TO ENTICE YOU TO EXTEND YOUR TRIP
Once you have completed your week long art class, you may decide to remain in this part of Italy and explore all this wonderful region has to offer. It would be very convenient for you to arrange to rent a car at the Florence airport and the countryside is very user friendly. The roads are clearly marked and it is quite easy to find your way from one enchanting hill town to another. Here are some suggested itineraries and activities for you to consider.
CORTONA
Rent a copy of "Under the Tuscan Sun" and you will definitely want to spend some time exploring this beautiful hill town in Tuscany. The town has a number of excellent restaurants, a small but exquisite museum with an extensive collection of Etruscan artifacts, and marvelous shopping. The linens and leather goods are excellent values and exhibit the high quality that is usual for these products in Tuscany and Umbria. There are a number of wine tasting bars, called encoteca, where you can sample and purchase the delicious Tuscan wine.

ASSISI
This beautiful Umbrian city is famous as the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Claire. Located
high atop a mountain, overlooking the beautiful but more modern city of Maria degli Angelli, Assisi is breathtaking. The vistas from Assisi are exquisite. The medieval architecture, the shopping and restaurants available, and the churches to explore make this a must day trip. The major church is home to the famous Giotto fresco cycle on the life of St. Francis and also houses his remains. For more information on Assisi, you can go to www.bellaumbria.net/Assisi.
While in the Assisi area, you may want to arrange to take a half day cooking class from Letizia at Madonna del Piatto. These classes are delightful and, best of all, you get to eat what you prepare. Letizia, who speaks fluent English, is a delightful hostess as well as being an excellent instructor. She will take you to a local specialty shop where you will learn the differences between the various olive oils, cheeses and hams so important to Umbrian cuisine. You can get further information on these classes, as well as the beautiful rooms available to rent, by contacting her website at www.incampagna.com.
DERUTA
|
Located a short distance from Assisi is the city of Deruta, famous worldwide for its colorful ceramic pottery. The ancient section of the city, the centro storico, has a wonderful selection of shops where ceramic artisans work as they have for centuries. Also located in this older section of the city is La Fontanina, a marvelous restaurant that serves both lunch and dinner. The small church in the old city center is also worth a visit as is the museum of ceramics located next door. Peek behind the museum at the courtyard which was apparently once part of a monastery. GUBBIO
You will spend one day in Gubbio during your week at Caifiordi, but that will not be time
enough to fully explore this quaint medieval city. In addition to the Roman ampitheatre and the Church of St. Ubaldo, which will see during your class, there are many other churches in Gubbio that are well worth a visit. Additionally, there is a fountain in the city that will turn you insane if you run around it three times. More information is available at www.bellaumbria.net/Gubbio.
PIETRALUNGA
You will get to know some of Pietralunga while staying there during your week long class at Caifiordi. There is much much more to see of this beautiful village. Pietralunga makes a good jumping off location for day trips into the surrounding Capone Valley. If you want to hike, there are several well-marked trails of varying lengths and levels of difficulty that you can enjoy. In addition to Locanda del Borgo, where you will be staying during your class, accommodations are available
La Villa, www.residencelavilla.com or at Monte Valentino, www.montevalentino.it.
